NBC to air documentary on Toyota recalls

NBC on Saturday will air a two-hour documentary chronicling Toyota’s historic rise to become the No. 1 automaker, and its fall from grace this past year due to recalls affecting 8.5 million cars worldwide, most for issues involving unintended acceleration.

“Total Recall: The Toyota Story,” was filmed in the U.S., Japan and Britain (it originally ran on BBC), and says it gives the “remarkable inside story” on not only what led to the recalls, but how Toyota’s name “became synonymous with efficiency and was emulated by manufacturers around the globe.”

The program is scheduled to air at 4 p.m. Pacific Time (7 p.m. Eastern) on the NBC network, and includes interviews with Toyota officials, auto experts and those who said they were victims of unintended acceleration. The program is also scheduled to air again on Sunday and Wednesday.

Toyota is currently facing a bevy of lawsuits over the recalls, and many are to be consolidated in a case seeking class-action status that has been assigned to U.S. District Judge James V. Selna in federal court in Santa Ana.
