BMW Recalling 5 Series and 5 Series GT Due to Fuel Sensor Issue
Is the recall madness ever going to slow down or will it keep affecting one automotive producer after another?
Unfortunately, we don’t know the answer to that question, but what we do know is the the latest company to be affected by this is the premium German carmaker BMW.
The automotive producer has issued a recall for certain 5 Series and 5 Series GT models belonging to the 2011 model year, as the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) via Carscoop reports.
The reason behind the recall is the fact that a problem with the fuel sensor can cause the fuel gauge to show the driver that a larger amount of fuel (than the real one) is available. This can eventually lead to the stalling of the engine, increasing the risk of an accident. The campaign affects 6,000 vehicles.
This is how the recall is described in the NHTSA’s report:
Summary:
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN 2010 AND 2011 5-SERIES AND 5-SERIES GRAN TURISMO PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 12 THROUGH JULY 1, 2010. THE VEHICLE’S FUEL LEVEL SENSOR WITHIN THE FUEL TANK CAN BECOME WEDGED AGAINST THE TANK.
Consequence:
IF THIS OCCURS, THE FUEL GAUGE IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WOULD DISPLAY A LARGER AMOUNT OF FUEL THAN WAS ACTUALLY IN THE TANK. AS A RESULT, IF THE TANK BECAME EMPTY, THE VEHICLE COULD STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
As for the actual schedule of the recall, BMW hasn’t provided the NHTSA with a fix plan and notification schedule.
Owners of the affected vehicles can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
